Democrats Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after former President Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and stated they should be taken into custody and sentenced "by death" following their publication of a disputed video.
The Recording That Provoked the Debate
The video footage, released on earlier this week, includes six Democratic congress members who previously acted in defense or security roles.
"Like us, you all swore an vow to defend and defend this national charter," the lawmakers stated in the brief video. "And right now, the risks to our constitution are not only from abroad, but from right here at home. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can refuse illegal orders, you must decline improper directives. No one has to execute orders that violate the legal system or our constitution."
The Former President's Incensed Reaction
The clip reportedly trigger a heated response from the former president.
On later in the week, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional message, he declared: "This constitutes really concerning, and Risky to our United States. Their words cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Leaders React
Following Trump's statements on that day, Democratic leadership published a unified announcement denouncing the comments.
"Political violence has no place in this nation," they declared. "Congress members who were featured in the video all worked our nation with tremendous national pride and honor. We clearly censure Donald Trump's appalling and harmful death threats against congressional representatives, and call on Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The opposition officials also said that they had been in communication with security officials "to ensure the security of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these radical social media posts and retract his aggressive language before he leads to violence," the statement continued.
Officials' Defiant Answer
The representatives who were featured in the video also released a declaration.
"We are former service members and national security professionals who love this United States and took an vow to safeguard and support the founding document of the United States," they stated. "This commitment is permanent, and we plan to maintain it. No threat, coercion, or incitement will prevent us from that sacred obligation."
"The significant point is that the president deems it subject to penalty by execution for us to repeat the legal requirements," they continued. "Our service members should understand that we have their backs as they carry out their pledge to the constitution and obligation to follow only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our duty."
They continued: "All citizens must come together and denounce the president's requests for our murder and political violence. This is a period for moral clarity."
Additional Political Responses
The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's comments and posted on online networks: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is calling for the capital punishment of government members."
He stated: "This represents an direct THREAT. All senators, each house member, all citizens – regardless of party – should condemn this right away and without qualification."
The Republican House speaker supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", adding: "This represents very risky, you have prominent officials of the legislature telling soldiers to defy commands, I think that represents without precedent in US history."
The Conservative representative also according to sources told journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the offense of treason" but that "lawyers have to examine the terminology and determine all that."
Administration Reaction
During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a journalist, "Is the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary responded: "Absolutely not."
"Let's be clear about what the president is reacting to," the spokesperson declared. "There are sitting members of the federal government who conspired to organize a digital communication to personnel of the American armed forces, to active duty service members urging them to disobey the president's proper directives."
She stated: "The purity of our military relies on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is broken, it can cause casualties, it can result in chaos, and precisely what these members of Congress ... are fundamentally supporting."
