'Enduring a Horrific Ordeal': Relatives of Missing Teenagers Desperately Seek Information After Alpine Fire
The loved ones of young people lost after a deadly inferno at a bar in a Swiss winter destination are facing an excruciating wait for answers and pleading for information about their family members online.
The inferno ripped through the Le Constellation bar in the alpine resort, located in the Alps of the Valais region, in the early hours of January 1st. Verified video reveal the ceiling igniting as bottles with fireworks are raised in celebration.
Emergency services have indicated that it could take an extended period to identify the those who perished of the fire, which claimed the lives of 40 people and hurt another 119. A spokesperson noted on the latest update that the majority of the injured have been accounted for, with the process ongoing to identify the final individuals.
In the meantime, families and friends have been taking to the internet to request any news about their friends who were present at the venue that fateful night.
Heartbreaking Pleas for the Missing
The whereabouts of Swiss national Arthur Brodard, a teenager, are still unconfirmed, according to an appeal from his mother.
The resident of a town near Lausanne, informed a local newspaper that she had gone back to the city to see if he was in the hospital, while his other parent did the equivalent search in the capital, but was unsuccessful.
"It feels like a terrible dream, a horror. The options are finding my son in the hospital mortuary, or I find him in intensive care. It's terrible," she stated.
She continued that some of his peers had been located with burns covering a significant portion of their bodies. "It's indescribable; they endured a terrifying ordeal."
The Italian government has confirmed that a number of of its nationals are still unaccounted for.
Among them is Emanuele Galeppini, a 16-year-old promising athlete, originally from Genoa but now living in Dubai.
The Italian Golf Federation has released a tribute that he is no longer with us, without mentioning the fire, paying tribute to a "talented young man who represented passion and authentic values."
