Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood has unveiled what is being labeled the largest changes to address illegal migration "in decades".

This package, inspired by the stricter approach adopted by Denmark's centre-left government, makes asylum approval temporary, limits the appeal process and threatens travel sanctions on countries that impede deportations.

Refugee Status to Become Temporary

Those receiving refugee status in the UK will be permitted to stay in the country on a provisional basis, with their status reviewed every 30 months.

This signifies people could be repatriated to their native land if it is judged "stable".

This approach mirrors the policy in the Scandinavian country, where protected persons get temporary residence documents and must submit new applications when they end.

Authorities says it has already started supporting people to repatriate to Syria willingly, following the toppling of the Assad regime.

It will now investigate mandatory repatriation to the region and other countries where people have not regularly been deported to in the past few years.

Refugees will also need to be resident in the UK for twenty years before they can request indefinite leave to remain - raised from the present 60 months.

Additionally, the authorities will introduce a new "employment and education" immigration pathway, and prompt protected persons to secure jobs or begin education in order to move to this route and qualify for residency more quickly.
