Giants QB Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Remarks

NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this week, responding to latest comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared on X. "Had no idea you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media."

The quarterback's remarks directly referenced the notorious Bounty Gate issue from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the Saints.

During that period, the NFL found that the Saints had incentivized players for making aggressive tackles on rival teams. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the league for one season.

What Sparked the Latest Dispute

Wilson's reaction came after Payton made remarks following the Broncos' historic comeback win over the Giants. Payton suggested that the Giants had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Additionally, Payton implied that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson instead of Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened long after our game,'" Payton stated.

Background of the Coach-QB Relationship

  • The quarterback joined the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a 5-year, $245M extension.
  • The Broncos finished 4-11 in his debut year before Denver hired Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a period in broadcasting.
  • The coach benched Wilson late into the 2023 season, a move that prevented the player from suffering an injury.

Had Wilson stayed on the roster by spring 2024, his $37 million pay for 2025 would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was released, marking the contentious breakup between the quarterback and his mentor.
