Larry Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board

Corporate Departure
Summers declared he would withdraw from public positions after legislative body made public his regular messages with the financier

Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is exiting the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a series of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became public.

Summers stated in a release that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have contributed, excited about the potential of the enterprise, and look forward following their development".

The former Harvard president, who formerly headed Harvard University, announced on recently that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his connections with Epstein.

Email Communications

The recently released messages revealed that the official corresponded with Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 apprehension for suspected trafficking of young people.

In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company said it understood the economist's determination to resign.

"We value his significant contributions and the insight he brought to the governing body," the organization commented.

Congressional Action

This announcement comes after the two houses of the US legislature decided on this week to endorse a legislation that would mandate the Department of Justice to make public its files on Jeffrey Epstein.

The bill will then move to the desk of US President Donald Trump for approval. The President has said he plans to sign the legislation, after reversing his stance on the issue following pressure from his base.

Correspondence Findings

A collection of financier-linked correspondence released by the legislative panel last week included several prominent individuals in the billionaire's former circle, without implying any criminal activity by those individuals.

The emails showed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often trying to introduce the official to influential world leaders.

Personal Response

After the emails were shared with the general audience, he said he accepted "full responsibility for my misguided decision to persist in communicating with Mr Epstein".

He added that he wanted "to reestablish trust and mend relationships with the people closest to me".

Previous Positions

The professor served in high-level positions under party leaders; functioning as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under Barack Obama.

He headed the institution from the early 2000s and remains a professor there. When announcing his withdrawal from public commitments previously on this week, he said he would maintain his educational duties.

Further Repercussions

Following his declaration on Monday, the Washington think tank, a progressive think tank in Washington where he was a prominent member, verified that the economist was no longer affiliated with the group.

The former official entered the directorate of the technology firm, which creates the language model, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its chief executive OpenAI's head.
