Vince Gilligan Shares He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... Currently.
The creative mastermind could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would become a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the acclaimed series wrapping up—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Incredible Fan Response
One could easily to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and fan theories about Pluribus. He is doing his best to steer clear of all that.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's amazing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Will the creator Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team are not listening by public opinion, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… in a way.
“We have some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” he states. “but we are always ready to throw out a solid concept for a better idea. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, why not reference the legendary finales?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
